If your tent feels too tight, you can skip placing the pin in the bottom of the pole and simply set the upright pole directly on the stake or in the dirt next to it. This usually works well, and over time the canvas will relax and become less tight.
If the issue persists, another option is to shorten the upright pole by 1-2 inches. If you choose this route, be sure to wear protective gear and sand the edges of the pole smooth after cutting. This should help resolve the problem.
